Following a school and personal record tying performance, Sean Busch, a senior in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, was named UMass Athlete of the Week on February 8. The senior helped the UMass Track and Field Team to a solid performance at the Giegengack Invitational on February 5 in Connecticut. Busch tied his personal and school record in the indoor pole vault that Saturday, reaching a height of 15-9. The mark was good enough for third place and also qualified him for the IC4A Championships. Currently Busch ranks second in the A-10 Conference in the event for 2011.
The senior jumper followed up his Athlete of the Week performance on February 12 at the Valentine Invite in Boston by placing third in the pole vault with a height of 15 feet. The Stow, Massachusetts, native is coming off a 2010 season in which he was crowned A-10 Champion in the pole vault. Busch defends his title on February 18 at the 2011 A-10 Championships.
Last year, Busch also won the 2010 UMass Amherst Winter Male Scholar-Athlete Award by posting a GPA of 3.75, equaling the university’s individual record for the indoor pole vault at 15-9, and winning the A-10 Championship in that event. The A-10 Conference also named Busch to the Academic All-Conference team for his strong performance during the indoor track and field season, combined with his stellar academic performance in the classroom.
