According to The Daily Telegraph in the United Kingdom, an average adult forgets three things a day. With our human tendency toward forgetfulness in mind, a team of electrical engineering students has designed a technology called StuffTracker, which allows anybody with a Smartphone to monitor the location of valuable objects carried around on a daily basis. StuffTracker allows you to forget how forgetful you are.
Fellow colleagues, staff, and former and current students of retiring Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Professor Daniel Schaubert have initiated a new scholarship fund that will not only support the economic needs of our students, but will also recognize the lasting contributions he has made over the last 27 years to the university and his field. The Daniel Schaubert Scholarship Fund will benefit ECE students in his area of expertise – antenna design – as the director of the internationally renowned Center for Advanced Sensor and Communication Antennas (CASCA).
Out of 1575 papers submitted to the 2010 IEEE Conference on Computer Communications, or INFOCOM, two papers co-authored by faculty and graduate students from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (ECE) were chosen for the Best Paper Award and one of the two runner-ups. The Best Paper Award winner was entitled, “On the Feasibility and Efficacy of Protection Routing in IP Networks,” co-authored by ECE Professor Lixin Gao, along with first-author Eric Kwong, Roch Guerin, and Zhi-Li Zhang.
Two members of the tornado chasing team from our Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL), Director Stephen Frasier and Graduate Student Vijay Venkatesh of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, were prominently highlighted in an article for The Institute, a quarterly newspaper sent to more than 395,000 members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The reporter also interviewed former MIRSL Research Fellow Peisang Tsai.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Weibo Gong and his doctoral student, Sheng Xiao, have been selected to receive a $25,000 Commercial Ventures and Intellectual Property (CVIP) Technology Development Fund award from the University of Massachusetts president’s office. The name of their project is "Wireless Secret Key Management Using Communication Randomness."
On April 14, Dr. Dev Gupta '77 Ph.D., an adjunct professor in the University of Massachusetts Amherst Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, received an Alumni Association 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award, as presented at the Massachusetts State House. Each year the Alumni Association honors alumni, faculty, and friends who have built on their UMass Amherst experience to attain distinguished achievements in the public, business, or service realms. The 2010 Distinguished Alumni Awards were presented in the Great Hall of the Massachusetts State House.
Ramgopal Mettu of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is co-editor of the new Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results (JSUR), devoted to the surprises, unforeseen discoveries, and strange twists of fate that often accompany successful research. As the web site for the new publication explains, “The Journal of Serendipitous and Unexpected Results is an open-access forum for researchers seeking to further scientific discovery by sharing surprising or unexpected results.
On January 12, Sahil Shanghavi, a senior electrical engineering major at UMass Amherst, hosted an information seminar for 150 students at Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, his former high school in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. Two days later, on January 14, Shanghavi gave a similar seminar at the Bhawanipur Education Society College that was open to students from many high schools throughout the city.
Two leading electronics companies, Intel and Silicon Mechanics, have posted an article for their extensive customer base on the work of recent NSF CAREER award recipient Eric Polizzi of our Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and his use of an Intel® Cluster Ready HPC to speed up his research and boost performance. “Researchers in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, are exploring the computation of large-scale physics and engineering problems in nanosciences,” the article explains.
An article by lead author Daniel Schaubert, the director of the Advanced Sensor and Communications Antennas research center in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, rated third best on the top-ten list of “most read” online articles in the Microwave Journal for 2009. The article – “State-of-the-Art Antenna Technology: The 2008 Antenna Applications Symposium,” written by Schaubert, Jennifer Bernhard, University of Illinois, Robert Mailloux, US Air Force Research Laboratory, and W. Devereux Palmer, US Army Research Office – was the cover story in the January 2009 issue of the journal.
