Important items to note about the application process (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY):

Deadlines: JANUARY 15 for Fall admissions and OCTOBER 1 for Spring admissions

  • Submit a complete application packet (includes application fee, official test scores, financial and sponsor’s, if applicable, statements for international applicants, personal statement and reference letters, and other required materials) in order to be considered. (Note: The application fee is never waived.)

Processing of your application will be DELAYED if:
    • you send it to our department
    • you request a waiver of the fee
    • all required materials are not submitted
  • Be sure to complete the relevant portion of the application form, if you would like to be considered for an assistantship or fellowship. If you are an international applicant, you must submit the required financial statement with your application. Financial support is offered to a small number of applicants on a competitive basis during the admissions review process.
  • Our completed application and all accompanying materials must be sent via the www and/or mailed directly to the UMASS GRADUATE ADMISSIONS OFFICE, not to ECE (see above address). GRE and TOEFL scores must be sent by Educational Testing Services (ETS) directly to UMass Amherst Graduate School, code: 3917, no departmental code.
  • Due to the large volume of applicants to our graduate programs, we are UNABLE to give informal preliminary assessments or respond to status inquiries before April 15th for fall applicants.

All final admissions decisions are made by our Graduate School. The Graduate School is solely responsible for informing all graduate applicants by letter of this decision.

Financial Assistance

It is the goal of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department to provide assistantships and/or fellowships to most graduate students whose degrees will culminate in the completion of a research project, thesis, or dissertation. Though limited in number, teaching assistant positions may be available for those either interested in teaching as a career, or involved in research projects that don’t have funding. Typically, tuition credits are part of the assistantship contract.

Our graduate education prepares students for academic positions or leadership positions in industry. Our alumni are sought after by leading companies such as General Electric, Microsoft, Google, Intel, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, MIT Lincoln Labs, MathWorks, Oracle, Qualcomm, Samsung, Opnet, Cisco, EMC Corporation, Microsoft, Motorola, Verizon, and Lucent Technologies, and government agencies such as NASA.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of the state university. It was founded in 1863 under the provisions of the Morrill Land Grant Act, which was passed by the United States Congress one year earlier. Situated in one of the most picturesque sections of the state, UMass Amherst joins with its academic neighbors — Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire colleges — in the Five College consortium, which helps maintain the rich tradition of educational benefits and cultural activity associated with the Connecticut Valley. Amherst is also within easy reach of New York, Boston, and Montreal, and has a reputation throughout New England for its numerous outdoor activities.

Additional FAQ

Q. May I send you my resume and/or other information (by email or post) to obtain a preliminary assessment of my chance for admission and/or financial support?

A. Since we are unable to give preliminary assessments of the chances of admission and/or financial support without a full application package, we will not respond to assessment inquiries made prior to receiving an application and urge you to formally apply.

Q. Are there specific admission requirements for admission to your department other than the Graduate School requirements?

A. We have a large and extremely well-qualified applicant pool. Emphasis for admission is put on letters of recommendation, the personal statement (specified area of research interest), previous degree curriculum, GPA, and GRE scores. GPAs of our admitted applicants are generally above 3.0/4.0. GRE scores are generally very high but are not used as a single indicator. A TOEFL score of more than 550 is required for international students. International students are required to submit a financial statement. Our faculty are looking for applicants with the highest potential for academic and research success.

Q. How do I check the status of my application?

A. You may check the status of your application on the UMass Amherst Graduate School web site. You will be asked to enter the PIN number you either have been sent or will be sent by the Graduate School. Please note that our department does not provide information concerning applicant status due to the large number of applicants to our Graduate Programs. Multiple status inquiries only delay our application process. All applicants are notified of their admission status directly by the Graduate School Admissions Office as soon as possible after decisions are finalized.

Q. When our M.S. ECE students are applying for the ECE Ph.D. program, do they have to resubmit their transcripts and reference letters?

A. Current M.S. ECE students are expected to reapply for the Ph.D. degree, but current students do not need to submit credentials or pay the application fee. However, if there is a break in attendance between degree levels, payment of the application fee will be required. M.S. ECE students should submit current reference letters and a current statement of purpose. They may wish to submit any other credentials they want bring up to date.
